Beti Bachao Beti Padhao: Eligibility, Benefits, and How to Apply in 2025

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao is a central government initiative that addresses the declining child sex ratio in India and promotes the education and welfare of girl children. Jointly run by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and the Ministry of Education, the scheme operates through district administrations, Anganwadi centres, and schools across the country. This page explains what the scheme covers, how it works, which districts are covered, and what linked financial schemes can further secure your daughter's future.

What is Beti Bachao Beti Padhao?

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) is a centrally sponsored awareness and action programme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 22 January 2015 at Panipat, Haryana. The scheme was introduced in response to a sharp decline in the Child Sex Ratio (CSR), the number of girls per 1,000 boys aged 0–6 years, which had fallen to 918 as per the 2011 Census.

BBBP is not a direct cash transfer or subsidy scheme. It operates as a multi-ministry convergence programme that combats sex-selective practices, improves girl child survival rates, ensures enrolment and retention of girls in schools, and promotes their participation in higher education and society. The scheme is implemented through district-level task forces, Anganwadi workers, school teachers, local bodies, and civil society organisations. Initially launched in 100 gender-critical districts, BBBP has since been expanded to cover all 640 districts of India following a revision in 2022.
